Consistent with the mandate of the Sanya Declaration of the BRICS Leaders Meeting (14 April 2011), the Ministers of Health of the five BRICS’ countries met on the sidelines of the 64thWorld Health Assembly, on 17 May 2011, to discuss issues of common interest as well as prepare the BRICS Health Ministerial Meeting to be held in Beijing, China, on 11 July 2011. Representatives of WHO and UNAIDS also attended the meeting.

STATEMENT BY THE BRAZILIAN DELEGATION

At the outset we would like to thank the report by the Director-General on WHO reform and its future financing for a healthy future. We acknowledge the efforts to reflect comments and suggestions presented by Member-States throughout the ongoing consultation process and believe the document is a good basis for our continued debate on this important issue.

Paragraph 6 system: Brazilian intervention at the WTO TRIPS Council

On Wednesday, 27 October 2010, Brazil delivered the following intervention during the annual review of the Paragraph 6 system at the WTO TRIPS Council. The Brazilian intervention followed Canada's detailed explanation of her use of the Paragraph 6 system in the Apotex/Rwanda case. The Brazilian intervention voiced concern over the future prospects of access to competitively priced second and third line ARVs raising questions as to whether the Paragraph 6 system would be economically viable for generic producers.

The following statement was delivered by Brazil at this week's TRIPS Council.

According to press releases circulated in the first week of this month, the negotiating process of ACTA is virtually concluded.

A few points only would still remain open and those points would not prevent a final agreement from being reached soon, according to statements released by authorities from the countries participating in the ACTA negotiations.

Brazil's General Statement to the WIPO General Assemblies was delivered by H.E. Ambassador Roberto Azevedo, Head of the Delegation of Brazil. The statement broached many topics including the treaty for the sharing of accessible works for persons who are blind or have other reading disabilities, the legitimate trade of generics and the Development Agenda.

Press Advisory on NGO letters to WHO and WTO on topic of Dutch seizures of generic medicines in-transit from India to Brazil, Colombia and Peru.

In response to news about four seizures of generic medicines manufactured in India and shipped through the Netherlands in route to Brazil, Colombia and Peru, sixteen public health, consumer and development NGOs have sent separate letters to the heads of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
