WIPO General Assembly 2026 – KEI General statement

On Wednesday afternoon, 8 July 2026, Knowledge Ecology International (KEI) delivered the following general statement on model laws at the Sixty-Eighth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

KEI looks forward to working with WIPO to improve transparency. Public confidence of multilateral institutions faces severe challenges. Increasingly, WIPO is conducting consequential norm-setting negotiations in secret. This gives unwanted and unnecessary credence to the critics of the UN, and undermines efforts to understand the history and meaning of the agreements that are ultimately reached.

Artists, inventors, investors and consumers all have an interest in having better information.

In 2019, the World Health Organization adopted a resolution, WHA72.8, on “Improving the transparency of markets for medicines, vaccines, and other health products.” WIPO should begin cross cutting work on a similar resolution, for the IP systems it supports.
